Texas House Approves Bill to Replace STAAR Test with New System

The Texas House has overwhelmingly passed HB4, a bill to replace the STAAR test with a new system of smaller, less time-consuming assessments given at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. The move mirrors a similar bill passed by the Senate, with both chambers citing concerns over the STAAR test’s intensity and impact on classroom instruction.

Differences between the two versions—such as grading timelines, implementation dates, and score dispute processes—still need to be resolved before the bill can be signed into law. Lawmakers have until June 2, the end of the current legislative session, to finalize the legislation.

Temple Seeks Applicants to Fill Vacant District 3 Council Seat

Following the resignation of District 3 Councilwoman Susan Long, the City of Temple is now accepting applications to fill her unexpired term, which runs through May 2026. Eligible residents of District 3 can apply starting Wednesday, May 14, with a deadline of 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Applicants must meet all residency and eligibility requirements outlined in the City Charter and state law. The selected individual will be appointed by the City Council to serve the remainder of the term.
