Belton Approves Bond for Special Projects

The Belton City Council has approved the sale of $17.29 million in Certificates of Obligation to fund key infrastructure and public safety improvements. The bonds, sold at a 4.27% interest rate, will support the Temple-Belton Wastewater Treatment Plant expansion, utility relocations along Loop 121, and the purchase of a new fire truck and public safety facility. Utility revenues—not property taxes—will cover water-related debt, while tax impact for public safety projects will remain minimal. Funds will be available May 21, with utility projects financed over 20 years and safety projects over 10.

Central Texas Resources During Mental Health Awareness Month

During Mental Health Awareness Month, the Sunrise Center at Feed My Sheep in Temple is offering vital support to those facing mental health challenges. Led by “Miss Kaye” Cathey, the center provides free counseling, shelter assistance, rehab referrals, and specialized mental health classes like AA, NA, PTSD support, anger management, and grief counseling. Intern Roberta Bien-Aime, a domestic violence survivor, encourages others to seek help, sharing her own story of resilience. Services are open to all—not just those experiencing homelessness. For local mental health support, call 800-888-4036 or the National Suicide Hotline at 988.

Tanglefoot Music Festival Questions Arise

Temple is set to host its first-ever Tanglefoot Music and BBQ Festival on September 12–13, with country star Parker McCollum headlining and top barbecue pitmasters from across the country joining the festivities. While the event promises food and fun, the $3 million price tag—funded by the city's hotel/motel tax—has sparked mixed reactions.

Originally thought to cost $214,000, that figure was clarified by city officials as the marketing budget alone. The full cost includes producer fees, talent, vendors, logistics, and promotions. Two-day general admission starts at $203, with single-day tickets yet to be priced.

Some residents voiced frustration online, calling the ticket prices “ridiculously high” and questioning the city’s spending. Others are thrilled about the event’s potential to boost Temple’s profile and local economy. City officials say the pricing aligns with similar festivals nationwide.
